AAREN Russell has recorded his first Top 10 finish of the 2014 Dunlop V8 Supercar Series, finishing eighth at Western Australia’s Barbagallo Raceway.

An overnight set-up overhaul saw the Novocastrian Motorsport driver make progress through the field in Sunday’s second race, leading to Russell’s best result of the season and giving the team a clearer direction for the remainder of the season.

Russell qualified 15th and advanced to 12th in Race 1 on Saturday. Looking to extract more speed from the Go Karts Go Falcon, a rethink paid dividends on Sunday, with Russell making steady progress to finish eighth.

With the result, the 22-year-old was also eighth for the weekend, and moves up to 12th in the series standings after troubled runs in the opening two rounds.

The 2014 Dunlop V8 Supercar Series continues in Townsville on 4-6 July.

“I’m really happy with how the weekend ended up after a tough start. It was good to have two clean races for the first time this season, and we hope what we found with the Race 2 set-up will put us in good stead for the rest of the year.

“We couldn’t quite get the car in the sweet spot early on and we struggled in qualifying and Race 1, so we all put our thinking caps on and made a lot of changes overnight for Sunday’s second race.

“Little did we know that it was going to be a huge jump in the right direction. We had a car really capable of racing, with good pace, and it was great to crack the Top 10 again. It would have been nice to have started the weekend with how it was on Sunday and fine-tuned it from there, but it wasn’t to be.

“Still, Sunday was a really positive way to end the weekend, both with the result and what we found for Townsville and the remaining rounds.”
